Inverness, often described as the Gateway to the Highlands, is a thriving commercial and industrial center.
Kick off your visit on the 3rd (Thu): steep yourself in history at Fort George and then explore the activities along River Ness.

London to Inverness is an approximately 3.5-hour flight. You can also take a train; or drive. Expect a bit cooler temperatures when traveling from London in August; daily highs in Inverness reach 21°C and lows reach 11°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 4th (Fri) so you can drive to Isle of Skye.

Kick off your visit on the 4th (Fri): explore the striking landscape at Kilt Rock and then take in the dramatic natural features at Quiraing (Hill Walk). On your second day here, take in the dramatic natural features at The Old Man of Storr, then stop by Skye Batiks, then explore the striking landscape at Neist Point, and finally view the masterpieces at JR Art Gallery (Jeremy Rossiter).

Traveling by car from Inverness to Isle of Skye takes 3 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train and taxi; or take a bus. August in Isle of Skye sees daily highs of 19°C and lows of 12°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 6th (Sun) so you can drive to Fort William.

Fort William is the second largest settlement in the Highlands of Scotland with around 10,000 inhabitants — and the largest town: only the city of Inverness is larger.Fort William is a major tourist centre, with Glen Coe just to the south, Aonach Mòr to the east and Glenfinnan to the west, on the Road to the Isles. Start off your visit on the 7th (Mon): take in the awesome beauty at Nevis Range Mountain Resort, then see the interesting displays at West Highland Museum, and then admire the verdant scenery at Glencoe. On the 8th (Tue), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: admire the sheer force of Steall Waterfall, then take in the awesome beauty at Ben Nevis, then make a trip to Neptune's Staircase, and finally pause for some photo ops at Commando Monument.

Kirkwall is the largest town and capital of the Orkney Islands, off the north coast of Great Britain. On the 9th (Wed), take in the spiritual surroundings of Saint Magnus Cathedral, then brush up on your knowledge of spirits at Scapa Distillery, and then pause for some serene contemplation at Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm.

You can do a combination of bus and flight from Fort William to Kirkwall in 5 hours. Other options are to take a bus; or do a combination of bus, train, and ferry. In August, plan for daily highs up to 19°C, and evening lows to 11°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 10th (Thu) to allow enough time to travel back home.
